چکیده

We have examined the spatial distribution of substructure in clusters of galaxies using Einstein X-ray observations. Subclusters are found to have a markedly anisotropic distribution which reeects the surrounding matter distribution on supercluster scales. Our results suggest a picture in which cluster formation proceeds by mergers of sub-clusters along large-scale laments. The implications of such an anisotropic formation process for the shapes, orientations and kinematics of clusters are discussed brieey.

Group-cluster Merging and the Formation of Starburst Galaxies

A significant fraction of clusters of galaxies are observed to have substructure, which implies that merging between clusters and subclusters is a rather common physical process of cluster formation. It still remains unclear how cluster merging affects the evolution of cluster member galaxies. We report the results of numerical simulations, which show the dynamical evolution of a gas-rich late-...

The Structure and Content of Galaxy Outskirts

The outer regions of galaxies are expected to contain important clues about the way in which galaxies are assembled. Although quantitative study of these parts has been severely limited in the past, breakthroughs are now being made thanks to the combination of wide-area star counts, deep HST imagery and 8-m class spectroscopy. I review here several recent results concerning substructure, star c...

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups

It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...

Substructure in Clusters of Galaxies and the value of

We investigate the formation of clusters of galaxies in an expanding universe using a new code that regrids at a region of high density. In particular we investigate two models for the initial conditions, both with the standard CDM power spectrum-one has = 1 and the other = 0:2. Both universes have H 0 = 100 km s 1 Mpc 1 and = 0. The level of substructure in the nal cluster can be used as a dis...

Substructure in Dark Halos: Orbital Eccentricities and Dynamical Friction

The virialized regions of galaxies and clusters contain significant amounts of substructure; clusters have hundreds to thousands of galaxies, and satellite systems and globular clusters orbit the halos of individual galaxies. These orbits can decay owing to dynamical friction. Depending on their orbits and their masses, the substructures either merge, are disrupted or survive to the present day...
